“Kevin, I attended an On-Purpose® program and found my purpose.” This music to my ears naturally invites me to ask, “What’s your 2-word purpose?”
About half the time the person’s eyes light up as they share it. A meaningful conversation follows as they describe how their purpose is at work within them and in their service to the common good.
Others, however, pause, reflect, and make a few upward glances in a memory scan. Next, they either confess to forgetting or they stammer out a butchered version of a “purpose statement.” Listening politely, my heart breaks for their loss. Typically I then ask for their permission to perform some purpose coaching.
Your purpose is priceless alive and worthless dormant. Imagine a beggar being handed a $10 million check, but he doesn’t know how to deposit it. Technically, he’s rich. In fact, he’s still poor.
Your purpose is the doorway to your promised life, but you’ve got to walk through it. Why spend the rest of your days in a poverty of purpose? Unlike the beggar’s check, your purpose is always valid for deposit into your life account.
Your purpose persists no matter how much you resist. You may delay putting your purpose to work but you can’t deny it. Either you are working with or against your purpose — collaborating or fighting yourself. You know which it is. And you decide which it will be.
